My name is Heather Hilton-Melancon. I completed my birth doula training through DONA in 2008, and began a formal Midwifery apprenticeship soon thereafter. I am a current student of The Midwifery College of Utah, am certified in Neonatal Resuscitation and continue to expand my education through many local workshops, classes and seminars specific to childbirth and breastfeeding.
I have had the honor of providing labor support to lots of families in many different settings; in hospitals, at the family's home, and in birth centers. Most of my clients have chosen to birth gently and naturally, and I have helped them to achieve those goals. I have also supported many women through successful VBAC's as well as medicated births.
Originally from Louisiana, I moved to the city of Benicia, Ca located in beautiful Solano County in 2002. I am a mother of two and am married to my best friend!
After giving birth to my son, I felt that there was something missing from our medical system. My doctor was very busy and didn't take time to educate me; which made me feel like I didn't have a choice or even options in my care.
About a year after his birth I started really processing things & asking "why?", "isn't there another way?". There was so much more I didn't know. That's when I realized how important it would be to have someone, who is knowledgeable about birth to with the mother to offer comfort and support and provide information and resources to help her to make her own informed choices.
A few years after I moved to California, my husband and I decided that we were ready to expand our family again. I knew that this time I wanted to do things differently. So I did some research, found a wonderful midwife, a great birth doula and decided to have my daughter at home.
It was during this journey that I truly found my passion for childbirth. I left my 9-5, went to a DONA birth doula training workshop, and started supporting women through this magical journey!
Since then I have come to believe very strongly in the strength and ability of women and their bodies to give birth, that birth is a natural process and I am an all around birth advocate.
It is my wish that every woman have the birth they desire and that no matter how or where the birth takes place, it be nurtured and protected.
It is a great privilege and an honor to be present during a birth. I cannot think of anything more precious and rewarding!
